American Canid

Canids (including coyotes, wolves, foxes) are among the most charismatic of mammal species.  They also share a number of biological and behavioral similarities with another charismatic group of mammals: the primates.  Among these parallels include high intelligence, large brains relative to body size, and reliance on learned behavior. Like primates, many carnivoran species are highly endangered, but some species are flourishing regardless extensive human pressures.  Coyotes are an example; like the baboons of sub-Saharan Africa, this canid species is rapidly colonizing human – dominated landscapes, despite extensive efforts to cull their numbers.

Canids are often in the news, both popular media and scientific publications.  This site serves as a way to curate some of this information, with a focus on the coyotes, wolves, and foxes of North America.  Enjoy!
